What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

Everyone experiences challenges in life and all the ups and downs we face are the natural expressions of life.  If something bad happens to you, you feel sad, scared, frustrated, etc.  That is natural and there is no need for therapy.  Coaching brings a set of strategies into the game to help you focus on what you want and then achieve that.  We don’t focus on the “bad” things any more than is necessary to identify them and then we move on to achieving positive and powerful results.  Some people do need time to process things that happen in the past.  That’s where therapy is quite valuable.

The fundamentals of life coaching are what distinguishes it from therapy. Life coaches do not diagnose the people they work with, while therapists determine illnesses and pathologies so their patients can be clinically treated. Therapists analyze their client’s past as a tool for understanding present behaviors, whereas life coaches simply identify and describe current problematic behaviors so the client can work to modify them. In other words, therapists focus on “why” certain behavioral patterns occur, and coaches work on “how” to work toward a goal

Why hire a coach?

I like to look at it like the Olympics – most athletes who go to the Olympics have a coach – they’re already exceptional athletes, but they need to be able to focus on the habits and routines and exercises that keep them exceptional and they bring in a coach to take some of the load off of strategizing and identifying the gaps.  My role as your coach is to help you achieve Olympic level results in specific areas of your life!

How does coaching work best?

The best way to maximize each coaching call is to have a clear outcome (to the best of your ability) for each coaching call.

The easiest way to get clarity on outcomes for each call is to remember that coaching is about closing the gap between where you are today and where you really want to be. Some great outcomes for coaching calls could be:

– I want to grow my business (or income) by 50% in 12 months

– I want my company to hit it’s true potential

– I want my team to raise their game and transform our clients experience

– I want to have an amazing relationship with my partner

– I want to have abundant health & energy

– I want to feel more happiness, adventure, security, excitement or fun in my life
